Movie Reviews #17 - Black Rain (1989)

Plot: (from imdb.com) Two New York cops get involved in a gang war between members of the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. They arrest one of their killers and are ordered to escort him back to Japan. In Japan, however, he manages to escape. As they try to track him down, they get deeper and deeper into the Japanese Mafia scene and they have to learn that they can only win by playing the game the Japanese way.

Review: I`ll say, it Michael Douglas is a badass!!! Around this time, late 80s early 90s, he was at his peak. Such an entertaining actor who engages you. In this movie, he gets to be at his best as a tough New York cop who does take any bullshit. The things he says, so very cool. His pairing with Andy Garcia works well too, they`ve got good chemistry as partners. 

            The setting in Japan makes it different than most cop movies. However by the end it changes from a serious drama into more of a buddy cop movie. Overall it’s a decent movie but if it weren`t for Douglas`s awesomeness it would have been brought down a bit.

TV Reviews #6 - Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2 (1988-1989)

The first season of a show is often very experimental, but it’s in season 2 that a few tweaks are done to improve the overall product. TNG made some changes in season 2 for the better. Ryker got his beard, Worf started actually doing something useful and they cut down on the god like beings. The stories were more focused on the characters and less on some random villain we would never see again. We got to delve into many of the important crew members and find out what they are about. And to top it all off, we got the first appearance of the Borg!! Nothing too serious this time, but you can tell they will be a major threat in the future. The series is on the right path and hopefully it keeps going well.

God damn it winter is hard. -20 temperatures do not agree with me. But you survive it, you get through and before you know summer arrives. So to all of you out there, cheer up, it will get better. You've made through this many, what's one more?

Movie Reviews #16 - Jerry Maguire (1996)

Plot: (from imdb.com) When a sports agent has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it, he decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent with the only athlete who stays with him.

Review: I knew that Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Oscar for this movie, but I was surprised to see it was also nominated for best picture and best actor with Tom Cruise. This is overall ok but just don’t see why it got all the praise it did. Sure it created a couple of big catch phrases but other than that it’s not a great romance or morally enlightening movie. Everyone does a good job, Rene Zellwegger is pretty adorable, and the kid is a little annoying though. It’s just there, it didn’t greatly impact my life and sadly there’s much else that can be said about it.
