A book compiling the history of WWE is no small task. But
WWE 50 by Kevin Sullivan does a great job. It is not an in-depth look at the
first 50 years of WWE, but it gives reader a great crash course in it.
Throughout the book there are amazing pictures of historical wrestlers and moments.
The pictures have a fantastic quality to them. The text explains key moments
without going in great detail. It is not meant to be a comprehensive history
but more to highlight what was important and give the readers a taste of what
else they can watch and delve into it themselves.
The
book is very simple to pick up for anyone, fan and non-fan alike. A WWE fan
will have a great time reliving past memories and non-fans can learn a thing or
two about the business. They also go into topics I was not expecting. There are
many quotes from past WWE personalities and not all of them are favorable
towards decisions the company has made. They also delve into Chris Benoit, who
is someone whose existence WWE has tried to erase since he did what he did.
These inclusions make the book feel more authentic and not another marketing
tool. However, near the end they go into WWE’s charity work and other endeavors
which felt a little pandering.
Overall
this is a great book that I recommend everyone reads. No matter how you feel
about the business, these are extremely interesting stories that everyone can
gain something from.
