Plot: Freddy Kruger, a man who can attack people in their
dreams, is murdering a group of teenagers.
Review: A
Nightmare on Elm Street has a legendary status among the film community.
Freddy Kruger is an iconic character; most people know who he is. But how good
is the movie, really? The first few times you see Freddy, he is scary as he
mostly hides in the shadows using his powers to scare his victims before he
attacks them. In particular the opening credits are well done. The picture size
shrinks down while showing how Freddy’s iconic glove was created. It has a
dirty, grimy look, making the scene more unsettling. However, once Freddy is
brought into the real world, he seems to lose all his mystique. He is fooled by
a bunch of booby traps and he looks like a buffoon.
The
acting from the teenagers is definitely not good. Leads Heather Langenkamp and
a very young Johnny Depp are trying, but it’s obvious they are inexperienced.
It was early in their careers and in the end it’s not a big deal, they’re not
the main reason you watch these movies. Robert Englund, who plays Freddy, is
great. He conveys mystery and evil.
Despite
an original concept and a great start, the movie loses some steam near the end.
And that finale, I have no idea what actually happened. Was part of it a dream?
Was all of it a dream? It seems like
the writers just didn’t know how Freddy should be defeated. As we go through
the series over the next few weeks we’ll see if they find their footing.
Score: 7/10
