Plot: (from imdb.com) Several players from different
backgrounds try to cope with the pressures of playing football at a major
university. Each deals with the pressure differently, some turn to drinking,
others to drugs, and some to studying.
Review: #FullDisclosure, I am not a fan of football. However,
that does not mean I cannot enjoy a movie about football. In The Program we follow a university
football team as they go through a season. In that time, everything bad that
can happen seems to happen. Career ending injury, DUI, arrests, exam cheating,
steroid scandal, you name it. Although these moments can be overdone at times,
it illustrates the struggles these players go through. Despite all their struggles,
we do not necessarily sympathise with them. Excluding perhaps Omar Epps’
character, everyone else has major flaws that at times make them despicable
people. This worked in the movie’s favor since it gave us characters that felt
real instead of just giving us a hero to cheer for.
The
football scenes were well shot. They slowed down the action when necessary and
gave a good amount of dramatic flair. This movie as a whole probably won’t blow
anyone away but it’s a decent look back at the early 90s and made football
watchable.
Score: 7/10
