Being Canadian is normally a good thing. You get the same
quality of life as the US, actually it’s probably better since we have
universal healthcare and we are generally liked internationally. There is one
thing though where we are treated like second class citizens; streaming
content. Netflix is one of the greatest things in recent memory. We get to
watch tons of movies and TV shows online for the ridiculously low price of 8$ a
month. I’m not here to say that Netflix is screwing their subscribers, they are
not. What they are offering at the price they selling it at is a steal. The
problem is that people in the US get so much more than those in Canada that it
is not right.
Us
Canadians also get the “advantage” of paying more for these lesser services.
People can cite all kinds of things, like conversion, but the truth is even
when the Canadian and US dollar were on par, we still had to pay more for
stuff, so racism? I understand most of the restrictions are because of regional
licensing agreements but this is 2015, why is this still a thing? With the
internet, film companies can get movies anywhere at any time. The WWE Network
charges us 2$ more a month, for the “privilege” of having it as a TV channel.
And for some reason Bell, yeah I’m talking to you, doesn’t have access to the
on demand content, so I really have to pay more for less. We don’t even have
access to Hulu here, it’s like they are giving us the middle finger.
I’m not
asking to get better treatment, just equal treatment. It’s not right for the US
to treat their neighbor to the north and biggest trading partner like this.
Maybe someday things will change, but right now it’s really not fair.
