Movie Reviews #12 - Ghost Rider (2007)

Plot: (from imdb.com) Stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze gives up his soul to become a hellblazing vigilante, to fight against power hungry Blackheart, the son of the devil himself.

Review: Marvel movies not done by Marvel have been a very mixed bag, more bad then good unfortunately. They feel corporate and empty for the most part. Ghost Rider is, well, not that good. The character is not one of Marvel’s most famous, but there is definitely something interesting about him. A man making a deal with the devil who becomes cursed and a superhero, there’s some potential there. When the movie explores this aspect, it is actually somewhat interesting. Nicolas Cage does an ok job with this. From time to time he shows some depth and being a tortured soul. At other times, he just makes crazy Nicolas Cage faces.

The story strays in distracting and ultimately stupid ways. First off, the love story with Eva Mendes. So lame! It doesn’t bring up anything good, it doesn’t feel genuine and only distracts. Next are the police. Somehow Johnny Blaze gets in trouble with the police and now they are chasing him throughout the movie. Could you have more stereotypes for comic book movies? It does not feel right, Ghost Rider’s story is so much further reaching than the mortal world, and you don’t need this stupidity. Finally the villain, Blackheart. What the hell is his plan? Why does he need these souls to take over the world, he is shown easily killing anyone he wants at any time, why does he need anything else? His henchmen are also extremely lame and somehow, it’s never clear how, Ghost Rider can kill them with his chain.

Peter Fonda’s Mephisto is the other interesting character. He’s creepy, evil looking and his intentions are mysterious but not stupid. Maybe it works because you don’t see him that much. One more thing; Ghost Rider’s penance stare is a pretty badass power, glad that they included it. This movie overall has a few good things going for it but it tends to bog the audience down in stupid things that just don’t fit in with Ghost Rider’s world. A message to other movie studios; just cut your losses, sell the franchises back to Marvel and let them make a decent movie because you guys clearly have a hard time doing this.

Score: 5.5/10
