Movie Reviews #41 - A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

Plot: Freddy is back! This time he is hunting down the remaining Dream Warriors as well as Alice, someone who can bring her friends into the dream world as well.

Review: This movie may have the most ridiculous resurrection scene I’ve ever seen. I’m not kidding when I say this; Freddy is brought back to life by fiery dog piss. I would try to explain it but at this point in the series I’ve just given up trying to make sense of what is happening. Despite this stupidity, I have to say this movie is my favorite of the series so far. The tone of the movie is far from serious; it’s completely over the top! Freddy even wears sunglasses in one scene. What makes this movie fun is that the kills are so eccentric. An asthmatic girl gets the air sucked out of her, another one gets transformed into a cockroach, just crazy stuff.

The protagonist, Alice, is the best one of the series (even better then Nancy in the first one). She has a real arc, where she changes from the shy girl with an alcoholic father at the beginning, to Freddy’s ass-kicking worst nightmare. Alice gains powers from her friends that die in the dream world. For example, one them is great at Kung Fu, so once he dies she gets his skills. It’s an interesting feature that brings something new to the franchise.

For what it is, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 is the most entertaining of the lot. You really have to turn off your logic to get through it at times, just like the rest of the series.

Score: 7/10
