Movie Reviews #32 - The Rookie (1990)

Plot: (from imdb.com) Clint Eastwood plays a veteran detective who gets stuck with a rookie cop (Charlie Sheen) to chase down a German crook (Raul Julia.)

Review: On the surface, The Rookie sort of looks like a Dirty Harry movie. You’ve got Clint Eastwood as a cranky old cop with a big gun who shoots first and asks questions later. Unfortunately, The Rookie lacks something that those other movies had. There seems to be a clash of tones. Most of the time this movie is a not very serious buddy cop movie with Charlie Sheen as the titular rookie. Then something will happen that is dead serious and completely take you out of the movie and wonder what am I actually watching.

The villain played by Raul Julia is also somewhat underwhelming. He does a lot of despicable things and should be a lot more threatening then he is but again, just like the inconsistent tone he skirts that line of comical and dead serious.

I can’t say I particularly liked this movie. Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen just don’t have that chemistry together that these types of movies need.

Score: 6/10
